Cicada Summer

When you hear cicadas begin calling in the morning, you know it is going to be a hot day!

Cicada song is the distinctive sound of an Australian summer. From the treetops, a chorus of species, including Redeyes, Tickers and Black Squeakers, fill the warm air with whir, buzz and thrum. An occasional bush fly zips past and Pobblebonk Frogs call from a nearby pond, while Rufous Whistlers, Bronzewing Pigeons, Weebills and a Pallid Cuckoo complete the Australian summer symphony.

Some of Australia's larger cicadas are well-known for their penetrating sounds, but this recording features smaller species which create a shimmering tapestry of ever-changing rhythms and textures.

Feel the warmth of an Australian summer in the bush.
